What if one of Kenya’s biggest economic opportunities isn’t in an industry we need to invent, but in one we haven’t fully exploited?

We are investing in technology, fintech, finance, and real estate. Rightfully so. But are we overlooking one of our greatest competitive advantages? Tourism.

Our neighbour, Tanzania, is building a compelling global tourism brand. From luxury lodges in the Serengeti to international productions showcasing its destinations, the country is giving the world more reasons to visit. Seeing Tanzania featured in Love Is Blind: Netherlands got me thinking: are we doing enough to showcase what Kenya has to offer?

I recently visited our coast, and I couldn’t help wondering how much potential we are leaving untapped.

We have an extensive coastline, beautiful beaches, marine life, historic Lamu, and coastal communities that could benefit enormously from a thriving tourism economy. Infrastructure developments such as the Dongo Kundu bypass present opportunities to improve connectivity and unlock new possibilities.

And then there’s Nairobi.

A city where you can go on a game drive in a national park, enjoy excellent restaurants and nightlife, and wake up ready to explore forests and mountains. Few destinations offer such a remarkable combination.

But beautiful destinations alone aren’t enough. We must build experiences worth travelling for, paying for, recommending, and returning to enjoy.

That means better infrastructure, exceptional hospitality, consistent service standards, quality accommodation across budgets, and destination marketing that captures the world’s imagination.

Imagine the opportunities for hotels, restaurants, farmers, tour operators, artisans, and communities whose livelihoods depend on tourism.

This isn’t about choosing tourism over technology or other emerging industries. It’s about recognising an existing economic advantage and maximising its potential.

We have the coastline, wildlife, culture, talent, and international connections.

What we need is the ambition, investment, and execution to match.

Kenya, perhaps our next big opportunity isn’t somewhere new. Perhaps it’s right in front of us.

πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ It’s time to restart.
